So I got the part. But let’s rewind, shall we?
A week or so ago, David Cerda, the brilliant playwright I interviewed for Caged Dames shot me an e-mail and asked me if I’d be interested in reading for the part of Score in his play “Rudolph, The Red Hosed Reindeer” for Hell In A Handbag Productions. Always up for a new adventure, I said yes indeedy, I’d be interested.
A day or so later, the director Tim made contact, and I was set to read on Thursday night. And sing a cappella.
A cappella folks. No music. In a room of strangers. Um, I’m a DJ. There’s ALWAYS music.
So with my deepest fears exposed like an oral nerve with enough of a sting to keep me up at night, I munged into my collection of music and tried in vain to choose something to sing. Would a quick Ella ditty do? I’d been listening to her a lot lately, and the song “Beginners Luck” had bubbled to the top of my most played list on the old iPod, so I thought I’d go with that.
Practice, practice, practice, over and over I sang. I’m sure my neighbors are fairly sick of Ella, because I’d been singing her nonstop over the course of two days. And guess what? At the actual audition, I didn’t even use the song.
So. I was set to arrive at the church where they are rehearsing when I realized two things. One, I couldn’t really sing that song a cappella. It wasn’t going to happen. And two, I’d forgotten to ask for the scene ahead of time to memorize it.
Duh. If this ever happens again, I’ll be more prepared.
On the way from the train, the brilliant idea of some flavor of christmas carol popped into my head, and I settled on Santa Clause Is Coming To Town. I snuck into the church, up the stairs, and looked through every room I could until I found them. And lo and behold, Tim grabbed me from the hall and there I was in a room of actors under the microscope (so to speak).
The reading went fine, and the scene was fun. Thankfully Tim shooed most of the people out of the room and I sang my little Christmas carol as best as I could. And apparently, it was good enough because I have the part of Score.
SCORE! I’m Score. Score I am.
This is going to be an interesting journey. I’m going to have to sing, dance, and act. Three things I’ve done before, but mostly in distinct fashions. Not so much all at once. But who cares. It’s going to be a blast.
New journeys. That’s what life is about. Find the door, open it, and walk through.
That’s the only way you’ll ever know what’s on the other side.
