super paper mario: the saga continues

Again I stayed up too late playing Super Paper Mario. I’m up to level 3-4, taking the time to explore every nook and cranny of the game. One of the reviews I read mentioned an interesting fact about the game that I’d been enjoying, but hadn’t articulated until now.

In the game, your score is actually your experience points. As it increases, so does your level. In previous Mario games, there was always the opportunity to leave enemies behind. Who cares if you got a high score? But in SPM, you really should kill them all so that you can rack up experience points for a level up.

This may be one of the first games I’ve ever played where I’d like to go for 100% completion. I’m not going to do it on this pass through the game, but I went back and played the first level again and enjoyed it much more the second time. The 2-D to 3-D flips still make me squeal with glee. Plus I uncovered a handful of secrets I hadn’t seen during the first go through.

If you have a Wii, go out and buy SPM today. If you don’t have a Wii, go out and buy one JUST so you can play this game.

It really IS that good.

Sounds like to me that Nintendo stole a page out of Blizzard’s playbook. It’s one of the many reasons that World of Warcraft is so goddamn addicting!!
