iWant but iCan’t

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that I’ll be purchasing an iPhone. The problem is that I can’t buy one right now because my business trip to the UK is just on the horizon. Erring on the side of caution, I’m planning to wait until I’m stateside again to take the plunge. I know my Razr will work while I’m across the pond, and I know I’ll need to use it while touring around the fine city of London.

But that hasn’t stopped me from doing exhaustive research, and I truly mean exhaustive, on the internets. I’ve read (at last count) nearly 40 in-depth reviews of the phone, and every time Google Reader or my customized Google News spews up another one, I’m all over it, soaking it all up.

Why do I want an iPhone? I carry my laptop with me every day. I carry it because I want access to my e-mail. Working at a bank has it’s perks, but one of the downsides is that the network is fairly strict and I can’t check sites like gmail from my desk. Hence the desire for a remote device.

As it stands now, my Razr doubles as a modem for my PowerBook. Buying an iPhone will negate that because Apple has stated that you can’t use iPhone as a modem. Hopefully that’s only a ‘yet’ kind of statement, but time will tell.

I’ve read a lot of good and bad press about the various features of the iPhone. And you know what? I still want one despite some of the bothersome flaws that people have pointed out. Namely:

  • The absence of cut/paste
  • The finicky e-mail reader, which seems like the Treo 650’s e-mail app. It’s not bad to hear them tell, but it has limitations.
  • The lack of Flash and Java support in the Safari.app implementation
  • The inability to assign iCal.app events to distinct calendars
  • No customizable ringtones
  • No flash-drive storage capabilities

Even with that short laundry-list of things, I still want to condense the kit I carry to something smaller. But that’s not the exclusive reason. Mainly, I want a new toy, and spending this coin will prevent me from going out and buying a brand new Intel Mac Book Pro.

For a few months anyway…
