Abrazos Rotos, te espero
Abrazos Rotos is the name of Pedro Almodóvar’s latest film. I can barely contain my excitement. Once again we get to see the master work with the newly-Oscar’d Penelope Cruz, one of the powerhouses of the screen who never fails to take my breath away. The Almodóvar-Cruz or Cruz-Almodóvar combinación is always entertaining, inspiring, and ultimately moving.
We also get to see another gorgeous and talented mujer-Almodóvar, Lola Dueñas, who played the searingly intense and funny sister in Volver. I’ve followed her work as closely as possible. She is magic on the screen. Abrazos Rotos makes its debut in Spain near the end of March, but we have to wait until September to see it here.
I’d fly to Madrid for a few days just to see it.
I can’t recommend reading Almodóvar’s blog (link above) enough. He’s as masterful a writer as he is at capturing light and translating it into emotion. One of my favorite little passages (Pedro, amor, corazón, perdóname por usar este) is:
It was my birthday two days ago. I received lots of congratulations, some unexpected and original. For example, Meryl Streep sang Happy Christmas in Spanish to me over a friend’s cell phone, from San Sebastian, where she was receiving a tribute. Our mutual friend Chema Prado told her it was Happy Birthday, not Happy Christmas. Was she mistaken? I wouldn’t say that much. She was Meryl Streep and she could sing what she wanted.
