mavriksound changes

Monday, May 8th, 2006

Some of you may or may not have noticed that mavriksound.com is a redirect to this blog. I’m in the process of really cleaning up this site, and perhaps terminating it all together.

I’d like to move everything over to radiopeter.com. The blog will continue as usual over there, except I’ll be posting a podcast every so often in mid-blogstream.

Now the tricky part is figuring out how to transfer the wordpress stuffs. This should be fun…

la-gon Furonda

Thursday, May 4th, 2006

They are keeping Jade because she is good television. That’s the only reason. I wish they would kick her off, but they haven’t. Pfft.

I love me some Furonda. Tall and rail thin, with no chest and a plain face. She has a fierce model body-type. Perfect for molding into anything they like.

cookware

Tuesday, May 2nd, 2006

Matteo and I went shopping on Sunday and I purchased a set of Emeril Stainless Steel cookware. You could kill a horse with the 3 qt. sautee pan. It’s THAT heavy. Nice glass lids and stuff too. It’s basically a cheaper version of All-Clad stuff, with metal handles and things. Perfect for stove, oven, and broiler.

I’m still lacking a giant stockpot and a smaller saucepan. I want a 16 or 20 qt. stockpot, but who knows where the hell I would put a pot that size. Perhaps I could bathe the cats in it.

I made some hollandaise which I was tempted to devour in one sitting. For those of you who don’t know, my hollandaise recipe consists of almost two sticks of butter and three eggs with some lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Can you feel your arteries hardening?

It worked PERFECTLY (Julia, your recipe is the BEST honnnay!) but the taste was a bit off. I think I purchased old butter. I didn’t look at the date, so that was totally my fault. The lemon juice was also bottled (don’t hate me) so that contributed to the lackluster flavor. Next time, fresh butter, and fresh juice.

I need the 1 qt. pan for making roux. I can’t make roux in 2 qt. pan. It’s too big and the liquid in the measures I’m working with spread out too much. I want to move on to Bechamel and Veloute, both require a roux, but for the Veloute I need stock, so the stockpan has to come first.

I’ve never made stock from scratch at home, but this recipe on egullet looks promising. I’ll be doing chicken stock first, hopefully transforming that into consomme.

If I can make consomme I’ll be happy. It’s hard, but I’ll learn what I need to learn about the cookware and the process, so I can move on to beef stock, which leads into making demi glace.

If I can make demi glace, I’ll be ecstatic.

exciting weekend

Friday, April 28th, 2006

My podcasting Idol Madge Weinstein will be on the radio with us this Sunday. I’m nervous, I’m excited, and I’m so thankful that this interview has come up.

Aside from that, there are a million and one things I have to get done. Literally. Not the least of which is organizing my house and swiffering the entire place.

Swiffer. Gotta love it.

foie gras ban? are you kidding me?

Thursday, April 27th, 2006

In June the sale of foie gras will be outlawed in the city of Chicago.

Like we needed a law for that…

Alderman Joe Moore, the dumb ass who was the alderman of my former neighborHOOD in the 49th ward, was the sponsor of the ban. You’d think he would want to spend his time fixing up his ward of the city and removing as many of the gang problems as possible.

But no, instead he decides to ban foie gras.

Foolio.

why is it so hard?

Thursday, April 27th, 2006

Some lyrics from one of my favorite songs ever. It’s called Love Changes by DJ Spen presenting Jasper Street Company. The Elusive Club Remix is so brilliant. The words are bittersweet, and so am I at the moment.

changes
that’s what love puts you through
changes
that’s what love makes one do

you stayed awake, half the night
love can just put you through changes
it must be love that’s on your mind
you’re doin’ things you wouldn’t do before

love will make you oh so happy
inside
love will make you oh so sad
makes you cry

changes
that’s what love puts you through
changes
that’s what love makes one do

you wonder if it’s real this time
or just another hi, goodbye
you walk around starry eyed
can’t believe that love would hurt again

love will make you oh so happy
inside
love will make you oh so sad
makes you cry

changes
that’s what love puts you through
changes
that’s what love makes one do

ugh…piled up junk in my trunk

Wednesday, April 26th, 2006

I feel bloated. Too much junk in the trunk. I needs to get myself washed out with a high pressure spray gun. Colonic here I come.

In other news, I’m eyeing a dining room set or two from various places around the internets. My couch and bed still haven’t arrived, but my pocketbook isn’t upset by that. I’ve been burning through money like a mad man and I need to pace myself.

However, meine schwester Elaine brought me the glorious gift of a 20% off coupon at Linens-N-Things, which means the Kitchenaid mixer will SOON BE MINE. MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!! And then, I’ll be on to souffles and the like with Julia Child. Delish.

Sleepytime tea is my new favorite hot drink. On a slightly related note, I’ve had the chance to booze it up with Korbel and Red Grapefruit juice a few times too. Quite tasty and refreshing.

I saw some shelves I really liked for records, but it’s a matter of taking my time and figuring out what size, how many units, etc. I need to get.

Must get this junk outta the trunk.

My Chinese final is Thursday. Good god I’m not ready.

Breathe.

dizzy with energy

Friday, April 21st, 2006

I went to Dr. Dan’s this morning and am still high from the alignment. Whenever he puts me back in line I want to dance around and do high kicks all day. He knew exactly what the problem was and totally called me on it; too much worry, too much on my plate, too many things going on. But I have perspective on it all, and that is good.

My sister was downtown but we couldn’t make it to see each other. She’s passed a large engineering exam she just took, and I hope it means she’ll get out of the hellhole support department where she’s currently working. I really want her to live in the city. I hope she is able to transfer somewhere close and we can hang out more. By me not driving, I don’t get to see her as often as I’d like.

As usual, I have a busy weekend ahead of me. I still have to finish the Idolcast I’ve strung together. It’s coming along well, but I’ve been concentrating on other things. Radiopeter.com needs another episode too.

This is Holy Weekend for me, so I’ll be going to church with my family on Saturday night. It’ll be good to get my Jesus on for a minute. My heathen self really needs it. I love the mystery of the whole ceremony. It’s beautiful, and I can’t wait.

Sunday will be a huge day. I’ll be judging the Windy City Gay Idol at Stargaze early in the evening, and doing the radio late in the evening with Amy Matheny. I always look forward to working with her. She’s the best, and I love her energy.

My house is still a wreck. I am going to abstain from the booze this evening, slip out of Spin just as I’m paid, and sink into a deep sleep until bright and early on Saturday morning… when I’ll get up and begin to seriously make the place pretty.

The couch and new bed should be here soon. I need a million things from Ikea, and my sister and I plan to trek out there on Monday night. Hopefully, I won’t fall alseep while I’m with her. I need a dining room set, a possible chest of drawers, and some office chairs. More of a journey to touch things (I’m way better with spatial sense than actually figuring out what a 3′x5′ table looks like), Ikea will bring good ideas into my head, even if I don’t buy anything.

God damn I love my new place. I absolutely LOVE it.

how could I forget Liza?

Monday, April 17th, 2006

On Saturday, bartender Todd and I went to meet Liza Minelli at the Borders on Michigan Avenue. It was a two hour wait, but we did actually get to meet her for a few moments.

She looked wonderful, was full of energy, and had a huge beaming smile for everyone as they approached the desk. And let me tell you, her hands were gorgeous. Not the hands of a woman in her 60’s.

Someone call Madonna and tell her to get some tips from Liza with a Z.

Kitty, Madge, Idol, PNS explosion, oh my goodness!

Monday, April 17th, 2006

What a crazy Wednesday into the weekend.

Wednesday night my Japanese Sensei came over to see the cats. She seemed delighted with them and they with her. After she left I hopped on Skype and was able to call in to Madge Weinsteins advice show with Cheryl Murkowski. It was super fun. Visit yeastradio.com episode YR363. Be sure to subscribe to her podcast because it’s brilliant.

Thursday night was the Idol at Hydrate, hosted by my lesbian lover Amy Matheny and judged by the fabulous Julie (ChixMix promoter), Miss Foozie, and Jerry Nunn. It was a beautiful crowd and full of really talented singers. Such good times!

I slept most of Friday and unpacked a little bit. Spin was pretty slow that evening. There was some unnecessary lesbian drama too. Three gals got in a fistfight. After security broke them up, one of them was escorted out and punched the manager on duty in the face and cracked her lip.

What’s up with ugly dykes like that? Why the hell do they feel the need to fight IN THE CLUB. Take it outside sisters. You’re ugly when you get like that. Gross.

I closed Berlin that evening. *hic*

Saturday was full of more unpacking and errand running. That evening insted of going out, Aaron came over and we watched two episodes of Big Love. I heart Big Love. That’s all I’m sayin’. Watch it. It’s brilliant.

Sunday was a HOOT! I met with the PNS Explosion boys at Platiyo for margaritas and some good chats. Patrick, Noah, and Scott are all beyond charming. Noah’s boyfriend was there as well, such a cutie, and their friend Adam joined too. I think Adam was totally rubbing my leg with his food.

Can I just say I was praying it was Scott rubbing on me? And what does Scott rhyme with folks? HOT! He’s dreamy! I totally remember photographing him a year or more ago while I was shooting in the club.

After hanging at Platiyo, Patrick, Scott, and I went to Spin for a quick final cocktail. We caught some Desperate Housewives and then I showed them my puzzy cats. I can’t help showing them off. So many people for SO LONG have wanted to see them. So they popped upstairs for a second and then they were off.

I hailed a cab and headed down to the radio station and had one of the best shows yet. I’m still in total awe of Amy and how flawlessly she works. Each time I am on the air with her I learn something new. And I can feel our rhythm starting to really sync up. We do great work together and I’m super proud to know her and have the chance to work with her regularly.

After she dropped me off at home, I had planned to go out for a bit, but I totally crashed. Tonight, I must get to bed early…

delivery.com & Japanese food

Wednesday, April 12th, 2006

Last night I wanted sushi and didn’t want to leave the house. I went to delivery.com, setup and account in a minute, and had sushi at my place in 45 minutes from Kyoto @ 2534 N. Lincoln.

I heard about it from Madge Weinstein’s show and I think I’m now addicted. There appears to be quite a few promising Indian restaurants that deliver to Lakeview, and I intend to try them all.

Kyoto brought me two maki rolls, one of sour plum and cucumber, the other of crab, eel, and something fried, and an order of oyakodon, one of my FAVORITE Japanese dishes. It also has an interesting name:

親子丼 (おやこどん) Oyakodon
親 (おや) Oya means “parent”
子 (こ) Ko means “child”
丼 (どん) Don means “bowl of food”

Oyakodon is chicken slices cooked with egg and served over a bowl of rice. Parent and child over a bowl of food. In Japan where I first had it, they deep fried a breast of chicken, immediately placed the hot sizzling chicken over a bowl of cooked rice, and poured a beaten egg over it. The egg cooks as it coats everything.

Katsudon (カツ丼) is a variation where they fry a piece of pork and give it the same treatment. The name isn’t as fun as oyakodon, but it’s just as tasty.

美味しいよ! Oishii! Delicious!

problems and thoughts

Oh my gawd, there are still boxes everywhere in my new place. I have no dresser in the new bedroom, so most of my clothes are in desperate need of arranging in the closet.

My sound mixer is acting up, so I’m going to need a new interface for the PR-40 microphone I’ve been itching to use.

No couch yet and my big bad-ass bed hasn’t arrived either.

I’ve lost the coax cable for my television, so hadda watch a movie on the new laptop. It looked great, but can’t figure out how to get the media center toolbar to go away.

Where are the rest of my socks? I know I have more than I’m finding…

Linens-N-Things thou art the spawn of satan. You fail to mention how easy it is to purchase ten of your $9.99 deals and walk out of the store $100 lighter. But I love my new wine glasses. 20oz. baby!

Why do I keep forgetting garbage bags?

Having my own washer and dryer is HEAVEN.

Where is the plunger? Not that I need to use it, but I’m curious where it went.

My fabric shower curtains are far too long. I feel like I’m showering in a nuns habit.

Chicago Pizza is heaven. And I had Kyoto sushi DELIVERED last night. I shall turn into a blimp.

Running by the lake is amazing. Painful, but amazing.

Records, records, records, where to put my records.

23 and counting, more than radio

Monday, March 27th, 2006

There are 23 feeds in my Podcasting subscription section of iTunes. Some are daily ones, some weekly. Some voice, and some video.

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I’d be able to put my own “radio” for the day together. It’s totally selective programming. I choose what I want to hear, and I load it up and take it with me every day.

The world is totally changing. Entertainment is on demand, or on subscribe in the case of Podcasts. As a consumer, I pull down what I like. As a podcaster, I push out what I want people to hear. It’s an amazing relationship and I can’t wait to see how far I can take this.

There’s some HUGE stuff brewing with me right now. The impending move will put it all into focus.

I can’t wait.

just packin’

Monday, March 27th, 2006

I meant to get more done this weekend than I actually did. But I’m still packing. Packing packing packing. Somehow I have to get my ANTM podcast done along with a billion other things this week before I move.

I move on Monday. Oh. My.

On Friday night (Saturday around 3am actually), after DJing, I went with the Spin folks to Charlie’s. It was fun for a few minutes, but after a beer and a shot I made my way home. I thought, for a second, about trying to hook up with a certain someone, but then I realized how much drama that would have caused, and thought better of it. Besides, once this move is over, there’s a date in the works with a guy I met the other night.

So we’ll see.

Saturday Mom picked me up and we took the cats back to their house. We played cards for a while and watched cooking shows. Too fun! When my Dad got home from work we went to the Red Apple and stuffed ourselves silly with Polish buffet.

My gut was SERIOUSLY larger when I returned home, and I drifted off to bed quite early in a butter and pork fat coma. I sense another girth spurt coming on as a direct result of that meal.

On Sunday I did a ton of purging early on in the day, throwing away lots of ratty clothes and old magazines. My Japanese teacher and I met around 4 for class at the local Starbucks, and then decided to eat a Tokyo Marina. I intended to come home after the meal and do more cleaning, but I fell into a stupor and drifted to sleep, only to wake up at midnight with no hope of getting back to bed.

I watched “Female Yakuza Tale”, one of the influential films that led to “Kill Bill.” There are several scenes that are echos of what Quentin Tarantino did in his film. The last scene is very much akin to his House of Blue Leaves fight scene. However, “Female Yakuza Tale” doesn’t have the giant fountains of blood that the Lady Snowblood films do.

中文 - Zhōngwén - Chinese Class

Friday, March 24th, 2006

Second Chinese class last night and I, well, to be honest, kicked ASS. My pronounciation is slowly building strength, thanks in great part to the CD’s I purchased that are the companion for our book. Already I’m beginning to hear the tones and get a feel for the vowels. Pinyin, the romanization of Chinese pronounciation, has a few nuances that are somewhat tricky to deal with, but it’s not too difficult.

We moved from initials, the first part of a word, to finals. Final sounds can take the five tones just like initials. things like -an, -en, -ang, -eng, -ong. With an initial “t” sound, that becomes tan, ten, tang, teng, tong. We reviewed 19 finals, combined with initials, for around 144 sounds…times five tones is some scary number I don’t want to think about.

Basically all we are doing right now is getting our mouths used to the sounds. We played a game where someone would read the word, and we had to write it down on a small plastic sheet with a dry-erase marker. Then we held up what we heard and the teacher wrote down our responses, and read them all to the class. I was 10 for 10, and didn’t miss a single one.

Then she moved onto writing. The basic strokes, and the basics of character construction. Since I can write Japanese, this was nothing new to me at all. The character building rules are exactly the same from Japanese, so there wasn’t much to learn there.

For homework, we were given a sheet with 10 radicals and instructed to learn them. They are as follows:

人 rén person
刀 dāo knife
力 lì power
又 yòu right hand
口 kŏu mouth
囗 wéi enclose
土 tǔ earth
夕 xī sunset
大 dà big
女 nǚ woman

why I love podcasting

Thursday, March 23rd, 2006

In St. Louis, a radio host made a racial slur against Cuntaleeza Rice on the air. It was claimed to be accidental, and he immediately apologized, but he was nonetheless fired.

It doesn’t matter what he said. It doesn’t matter that he apologized. What matters is that he was fired for saying something on the radio. How insanely stupid is that?

Now I assure you dear readers, I know what I’m talking about. I work on the radio. I realize there are rules. And I know how it can be when you are trying to say one thing, and another slips out. But this was his career. And they ended it because he made a mistake.

I’m not defending him. But I do want to repeat how awful radio is and how bizarre the medium has become. There are very few companies who own the airwaves these days. In the Chicago market alone it’s split between mostly two corporations.

This is where Podcasting shines. I can say whatever I want, whenever I want, and if you don’t like me, tough shit.

long live the podcast!

packin it in

Thursday, March 23rd, 2006

I hate packing. I hate it, I hate it, I HATE it.

There is nothing worse than having to split your life into pieces, toss them into a box, tape it up, and move it from point A to point B. Thankfully I’ve hired some big strapping menz to move it from point A to point B, but it’s still ugly having to split it all up.

I know I’m bitching a lot about this lately, but I really need to vent. And I also really need to become much less of a pack rat.

new place. new bed. new couch.

Monday, March 20th, 2006

I popped into Cassona on Saturday to purchase a bed and a couch. I’d been stressing about buying both for QUITE some time now, but I finally managed to make up my mind and settle in on these:

The couch will be dark chocolate with orange accent pillows. The bed frame will be the same color.

I’m moving my domains over to godaddy.com because they are lightning fast with their support, and I like their interface much better than the one that tch was using. This is domain only tho, not site content, so I’ll still be interfacing with tch for my content.

Use godaddy.com folks. Use it lots, and use it well. They’re great on the phone, and their online tools are superb.

mandarin, idol, and texas is still burning

Friday, March 17th, 2006

Thankfully, I like my Mandarin teacher. Her name is Tae Jin Kim and she’s not only funny, she’s wonderful at explaining things. She has us doing the equivalent of jumping jacks and cartwheels with our tongues during our first class, and it was amazing to learn how to make new sounds.

I’ve added to my lexicon the words labials, alveolars, dental sibilants, retroflexes, palatals, velars, all descriptions for what to do with your mouth while speaking. As far as voicing sounds, I learned what unaspirated and aspirated stops, nasals, fricatives and voiced continuants are. Who knew I’d learn a ton of new English while learning Mandarin? Here then is my explanation of each from a Mandarin point of view. This list starts easy and gets REALLY hard.

Labials: No you perverts, not labias, labiALS. That’s when you bring your lips together to make a sound. The unaspirated form would be the letter “b”. Say buh…notice how your lips come together but you don’t use a lot of breath. The aspirated form is “p”. Note the air. When you voice it up through your nose, the nasal, you make an “m”. Put your upper teeth against your lower lip and blow, and you have the fricative “f”.

Alveolars: Touch the tip of your tongue against the hard palate behind your teeth. Unaspirated: “d” Aspirated: “t” Nasal “n” No fricative, but “l” is the voiced continuant.

Dental Sibilants: Basically represents sounds through your teeth. Unaspirated “z” Aspirated “c” Fricative “s”

Velars: The back of your tongue hits the back of the soft pallette. Unaspirated: “g” Aspirated “k” Fricative “h”

Palatals: The middle of your tongue pushes out against the hard pallette ridge. Unaspirated: “j” (sounds like jeeeee) Aspirated: “q” (pronounced cheeee) Fricative: “x” (sounds like sheeee)

Retroflex: Holy shit, this is a hard one. Your tongue has to make a bowl shape and the air passing over it has to create a certain flow to get the right sound. I’ve heard LOTS of Mandarin speakers at work, so I knew the sound. But pronouncing it is HARD The Unaspirated is a “zh” sound but it has a soft “r” mixed in because of your bowl shaped tongue. So it kind of sounds like “zzzzhhhhrrrrr” Aspirated is “ch” but again with the “r” so it’s like “chrrrrrrr” There’s no nasal, but the fricative is “sh” which is like “shirrrrrrr” and the hardest is a cross between a German throaty “r” mixed with the bowl tongue sort of like “rzhrrr”. Nobody got the retroflex sounds right until a few minutes of trying to make them. They are the second most difficult sound we learned that day.

The MOST difficult was the ü sound. First you have to pretend you are saying the sound “eeeeeee” Then, while saying it, close your mouth and shape it like “ooooooo” but while saying “eeeeee”. I think French and German have the same sound, but it’s VERY difficult to catch. I barely got it, but I can’t summon it at will. It takes some planning with my mouth parts.

If those sounds weren’t bad enough, that was just the INITIAL tone list. Which means that sounds in Mandarin could just start with those initials. No mention of finals yet, but I’m sufficiently thrilled that they’re on the way.

We learned a few words to couple with our sounds. Remember my post about the four tones a fay or two ago? All those initials I described can take one of those four tones, or a flat sound, so that’s five tones. If you did the math, pretty quickly you discover that five tones times six vowel sounds times all those initials comes in around 500 and some odd sounds.

And that was only the first class.

Idol was short and sweet at the Closet. I haven’t listened to the recording yet, but I will have to pull together a quickie update and get something produced.

Texas is still burning. Mm hmm. Yep. Still burning.

chuugokugo ga hajimeru
chinese language is starting

Tonight my first Chinese class begins. I’m nervous, excited, and terrified all at the same time. This is exactly how I felt on the cusp of my first Japanese lesson, which I only started at the beginning of January in 2004.

Holy shiznit. That’s only two years ago. In two years I’ve managed to become relatively conversational in Japanese. I’m not exactly fluent, because slang trips me up. But I do know what’s going on when I watch Japanese television, and I can speak the language without an accent. In fact, that’s the thing I’m most proud of. My Japanese SOUNDS like Japanese. I can inflect, question, show respect, speak humbly, and laugh it up nihongo de (in Japanese) without sounding like an ass. I can even make jokes and quip about proverbs.

Will I be in the same place with Mandarin Chinese in two years? Only time will tell I suspect. But don’t think my Japanese studies will fall to the side. I still plan on my weekly classes with Fujii Sensei, and I’m determined to get back to Japan during the thick summer heat. I REALLY want to visit Okinawa and experience the fury of the summer and of course, their food. I’m not sure I’ll be able to even understand anyone in Okinawa, but hey, it’ll be fun.

そして今ここに居る頑張ている
soshite ima koko ni iru. gambatteiru.
And so, for now, I’m here. Doing my best.

chicago bar people rule

Wednesday, March 15th, 2006

After picking up my cats from Mom and Dads house, I scampered home only to turn around and head right back out the door. I met up with Todd for dinner at La Donna and stuffed myself with risotto laced with ground beef, onions, and cheese. STUFFED!

La Donna is so delicious. I forget about it all the time, but when I remember I get terribly excited by how delish it will be. Todd had a gnocchi dish with a tomato sauce. I chose a Cusimano Syrah and it seemed to go well with everything.

I’m not a wine whore, but I am learning from Julia how to begin pairing wines with food. That may sound snobbish, but seriously, when you do it right, the whole experience is INCREDIBLE.

That’s Julia Child by the way.

From there we went to Madrigal’s and were met by Ted, who is really such an incredibly artistic and fun guy. Actually, they both are great guys, and we tipped the strippers and sipped our tipples until the wee hours of the morning.

Damn. I love hanging out with confident, artistic, and S T A B L E Gay men. It’s so rare to hang out with guys who are comfortable in their own skin, much less ones who are blessed with the gift of the gab. And both Todd and Ted are smart, handsome, and conversationalists.

Somehow we ended up at Jackhammer, but the karaoke was grating on us, so we went to the touchy…I mean Touche and sat in the back room drinking and discussing the virtues of cleaning your plumbing. I won’t go into details, but it was fun. There was barely anyone in the joint, so it was low key.

Damn I love Chicago. And damn I love Chicago bar people. We’re a unique breed.

What have I gotten myself into?

Tuesday, March 14th, 2006

So. I purchased my Chinese book yesterday. Good god. What HAVE I gotten myself into? A tonal language dear readers. TONAL!

Visit this page for a moment to understand. Under the Chinese Tones section, click on the info in the Pinyin column to hear the four tones.

Basically the sound “ma” pronounced in four different tones means four COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS.

At least I’m not learning Cantonese. There are 7 or 8 tones. Some say 9.

This is going to be hard. Really hard. REALLY HARD.

constant comment

Tuesday, March 14th, 2006

Well, last night at Sidetrack I spent an evening singing along to showtunes. I’m not normally there on a Monday evening, but it was bartender Todd’s birthday and I had to show some love. Aaron’s punk ass canceled on me at the last minute but I wasn’t worried. A night out by myself always turns out to be fun.

Fun indeed. I ran into Nick, a guy I met YEARS ago, and we had a great time chatting about how we’ve changed, how the scene has changed, and how much we hate it when the older queens change the words to the fabulous songs a-la-Rocky-Horror.

And then there was Steven. Stephen? Steeven? I’m not sure how you spell it, but he was deee-licious and from somewhere over the rainbow. I laid my numba on him and he phoned at 3am, whilst I was in dreamland sound asleep. He has a Kansas area code, and I suspect I’ll make contact with him later on this week.

But for now, here I sit, steeping my Constant Comment teabag. I’m tired, but it was a fun night out, and after the weekend that just passed, I needed it.

the windy city

Monday, March 13th, 2006

Jeez it’s windy out there today. I was nearly blown away while I was attempting to satisfy my Big Mac attack. Yes yes, Mc Donalds isn’t part of a balanced diet. But damn it, I had a bad weekend so it was therapy. Food therapy.

Mmm. Big Mac.

I’m totally in love with a band called Plastic Soul Band. 好きよ! They are from Tokyo and I swear I’ve heard the name around Chicago before. I suspect they came through these parts and played at the Empty Bottle before. I didn’t know much Japernese (Wanda Wisdom is rubbing off on me) at the time, でも今日本語が出来る. I hope they decide to travel back to Chicago so I can meet and possibly interview them.

In other news, I begin my Chinese Language, or hànyǔ, studies on Thursday. I should be able to pick up my book tonight!!

Lord have mercy, I drank a lot last night. It was Kenz birfay and we all went out to Spinz to look at the new urange walls and enjoy a few libations. There was a super delicious tasty pomegranet liquor that was transmogrified into brilliant martinis by the fablous Nick.

After the drinkin’, we did some eatin’ at Clark’s. Oh my you should eat.

Crystal Lake vote

Tuesday, March 7th, 2006

In Crystal Lake tonight the local Park District board is preparing to take another vote to see if they will allow the Gay Games rowing competition to be held in the actual Crystal Lake. There was a previous vote taken, but it ended in a tie. Tonights tie-breaker will consist of five voters, one of whom was on vacation when the first vote was held.

It was refreshing to see my boss, Tracy Baim, quoted in todays Tribune:

[Gay Games] Organizers don’t look at a tie vote as evidence that Crystal Lake is a close-minded community, Baim said, adding, “We have people who are anti-gay in the city of Chicago.”

Amen sister.  It’ll be sad if people around the world don’t get the chance to see Crystal Lake, but I won’t be mad about it if they don’t.  It sucks that it’s appearing as a hot button anti-gay item, because in reality I don’t think it is.  But the media, as usual, blows things up into balloons that pop with the slightest nudge.
