godaddy.com rocks

Monday, March 20th, 2006

totalchoicehosting got messed up over the weekend, and radiopeter.com was backed up with an old image. Not that I cared because I didn’t have any of the podcasts finished for the week, but I was upset the page wasn’t tip-top.

I’m moving my domains over to godaddy.com because they are lightning fast with their support, and I like their interface much better than the one that tch was using. This is domain only tho, not site content, so I’ll still be interfacing with tch for my content.

Use godaddy.com folks. Use it lots, and use it well. They’re great on the phone, and their online tools are superb.

The Sentinel

Friday, March 17th, 2006

Kim Basinger, Eva Longoria, Michael Douglas, Kiefer Sutherland, Martin Donovan. They are all in a new movie coming shortly called “The Sentinel”. It’s about some secret service traitor or something.

I might have to see this one. I love me some Kim Bassinger, and to think of her as playing the first lady is interesting.

mandarin, idol, and texas is still burning

Friday, March 17th, 2006

Thankfully, I like my Mandarin teacher. Her name is Tae Jin Kim and she’s not only funny, she’s wonderful at explaining things. She has us doing the equivalent of jumping jacks and cartwheels with our tongues during our first class, and it was amazing to learn how to make new sounds.

I’ve added to my lexicon the words labials, alveolars, dental sibilants, retroflexes, palatals, velars, all descriptions for what to do with your mouth while speaking. As far as voicing sounds, I learned what unaspirated and aspirated stops, nasals, fricatives and voiced continuants are. Who knew I’d learn a ton of new English while learning Mandarin? Here then is my explanation of each from a Mandarin point of view. This list starts easy and gets REALLY hard.

Labials: No you perverts, not labias, labiALS. That’s when you bring your lips together to make a sound. The unaspirated form would be the letter “b”. Say buh…notice how your lips come together but you don’t use a lot of breath. The aspirated form is “p”. Note the air. When you voice it up through your nose, the nasal, you make an “m”. Put your upper teeth against your lower lip and blow, and you have the fricative “f”.

Alveolars: Touch the tip of your tongue against the hard palate behind your teeth. Unaspirated: “d” Aspirated: “t” Nasal “n” No fricative, but “l” is the voiced continuant.

Dental Sibilants: Basically represents sounds through your teeth. Unaspirated “z” Aspirated “c” Fricative “s”

Velars: The back of your tongue hits the back of the soft pallette. Unaspirated: “g” Aspirated “k” Fricative “h”

Palatals: The middle of your tongue pushes out against the hard pallette ridge. Unaspirated: “j” (sounds like jeeeee) Aspirated: “q” (pronounced cheeee) Fricative: “x” (sounds like sheeee)

Retroflex: Holy shit, this is a hard one. Your tongue has to make a bowl shape and the air passing over it has to create a certain flow to get the right sound. I’ve heard LOTS of Mandarin speakers at work, so I knew the sound. But pronouncing it is HARD The Unaspirated is a “zh” sound but it has a soft “r” mixed in because of your bowl shaped tongue. So it kind of sounds like “zzzzhhhhrrrrr” Aspirated is “ch” but again with the “r” so it’s like “chrrrrrrr” There’s no nasal, but the fricative is “sh” which is like “shirrrrrrr” and the hardest is a cross between a German throaty “r” mixed with the bowl tongue sort of like “rzhrrr”. Nobody got the retroflex sounds right until a few minutes of trying to make them. They are the second most difficult sound we learned that day.

The MOST difficult was the ü sound. First you have to pretend you are saying the sound “eeeeeee” Then, while saying it, close your mouth and shape it like “ooooooo” but while saying “eeeeee”. I think French and German have the same sound, but it’s VERY difficult to catch. I barely got it, but I can’t summon it at will. It takes some planning with my mouth parts.

If those sounds weren’t bad enough, that was just the INITIAL tone list. Which means that sounds in Mandarin could just start with those initials. No mention of finals yet, but I’m sufficiently thrilled that they’re on the way.

We learned a few words to couple with our sounds. Remember my post about the four tones a fay or two ago? All those initials I described can take one of those four tones, or a flat sound, so that’s five tones. If you did the math, pretty quickly you discover that five tones times six vowel sounds times all those initials comes in around 500 and some odd sounds.

And that was only the first class.

Idol was short and sweet at the Closet. I haven’t listened to the recording yet, but I will have to pull together a quickie update and get something produced.

Texas is still burning. Mm hmm. Yep. Still burning.

中国語が始める

Thursday, March 16th, 2006

chuugokugo ga hajimeru
chinese language is starting

Tonight my first Chinese class begins. I’m nervous, excited, and terrified all at the same time. This is exactly how I felt on the cusp of my first Japanese lesson, which I only started at the beginning of January in 2004.

Holy shiznit. That’s only two years ago. In two years I’ve managed to become relatively conversational in Japanese. I’m not exactly fluent, because slang trips me up. But I do know what’s going on when I watch Japanese television, and I can speak the language without an accent. In fact, that’s the thing I’m most proud of. My Japanese SOUNDS like Japanese. I can inflect, question, show respect, speak humbly, and laugh it up nihongo de (in Japanese) without sounding like an ass. I can even make jokes and quip about proverbs.

Will I be in the same place with Mandarin Chinese in two years? Only time will tell I suspect. But don’t think my Japanese studies will fall to the side. I still plan on my weekly classes with Fujii Sensei, and I’m determined to get back to Japan during the thick summer heat. I REALLY want to visit Okinawa and experience the fury of the summer and of course, their food. I’m not sure I’ll be able to even understand anyone in Okinawa, but hey, it’ll be fun.

そして今ここに居る頑張ている
soshite ima koko ni iru. gambatteiru.
And so, for now, I’m here. Doing my best.

chicago bar people rule

Wednesday, March 15th, 2006

After picking up my cats from Mom and Dads house, I scampered home only to turn around and head right back out the door. I met up with Todd for dinner at La Donna and stuffed myself with risotto laced with ground beef, onions, and cheese. STUFFED!

La Donna is so delicious. I forget about it all the time, but when I remember I get terribly excited by how delish it will be. Todd had a gnocchi dish with a tomato sauce. I chose a Cusimano Syrah and it seemed to go well with everything.

I’m not a wine whore, but I am learning from Julia how to begin pairing wines with food. That may sound snobbish, but seriously, when you do it right, the whole experience is INCREDIBLE.

That’s Julia Child by the way.

From there we went to Madrigal’s and were met by Ted, who is really such an incredibly artistic and fun guy. Actually, they both are great guys, and we tipped the strippers and sipped our tipples until the wee hours of the morning.

Damn. I love hanging out with confident, artistic, and S T A B L E Gay men. It’s so rare to hang out with guys who are comfortable in their own skin, much less ones who are blessed with the gift of the gab. And both Todd and Ted are smart, handsome, and conversationalists.

Somehow we ended up at Jackhammer, but the karaoke was grating on us, so we went to the touchy…I mean Touche and sat in the back room drinking and discussing the virtues of cleaning your plumbing. I won’t go into details, but it was fun. There was barely anyone in the joint, so it was low key.

Damn I love Chicago. And damn I love Chicago bar people. We’re a unique breed.

What have I gotten myself into?

Tuesday, March 14th, 2006

So. I purchased my Chinese book yesterday. Good god. What HAVE I gotten myself into? A tonal language dear readers. TONAL!

Visit this page for a moment to understand. Under the Chinese Tones section, click on the info in the Pinyin column to hear the four tones.

Basically the sound “ma” pronounced in four different tones means four COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS.

At least I’m not learning Cantonese. There are 7 or 8 tones. Some say 9.

This is going to be hard. Really hard. REALLY HARD.

constant comment

Tuesday, March 14th, 2006

Well, last night at Sidetrack I spent an evening singing along to showtunes. I’m not normally there on a Monday evening, but it was bartender Todd’s birthday and I had to show some love. Aaron’s punk ass canceled on me at the last minute but I wasn’t worried. A night out by myself always turns out to be fun.

Fun indeed. I ran into Nick, a guy I met YEARS ago, and we had a great time chatting about how we’ve changed, how the scene has changed, and how much we hate it when the older queens change the words to the fabulous songs a-la-Rocky-Horror.

And then there was Steven. Stephen? Steeven? I’m not sure how you spell it, but he was deee-licious and from somewhere over the rainbow. I laid my numba on him and he phoned at 3am, whilst I was in dreamland sound asleep. He has a Kansas area code, and I suspect I’ll make contact with him later on this week.

But for now, here I sit, steeping my Constant Comment teabag. I’m tired, but it was a fun night out, and after the weekend that just passed, I needed it.

the windy city

Monday, March 13th, 2006

Jeez it’s windy out there today. I was nearly blown away while I was attempting to satisfy my Big Mac attack. Yes yes, Mc Donalds isn’t part of a balanced diet. But damn it, I had a bad weekend so it was therapy. Food therapy.

Mmm. Big Mac.

I’m totally in love with a band called Plastic Soul Band. 好きよ! They are from Tokyo and I swear I’ve heard the name around Chicago before. I suspect they came through these parts and played at the Empty Bottle before. I didn’t know much Japernese (Wanda Wisdom is rubbing off on me) at the time, でも今日本語が出来る. I hope they decide to travel back to Chicago so I can meet and possibly interview them.

In other news, I begin my Chinese Language, or hànyǔ, studies on Thursday. I should be able to pick up my book tonight!!

Friday, March 10th, 2006

Lord have mercy, I drank a lot last night. It was Kenz birfay and we all went out to Spinz to look at the new urange walls and enjoy a few libations. There was a super delicious tasty pomegranet liquor that was transmogrified into brilliant martinis by the fablous Nick.

After the drinkin’, we did some eatin’ at Clark’s. Oh my you should eat.

Crystal Lake vote

Tuesday, March 7th, 2006

In Crystal Lake tonight the local Park District board is preparing to take another vote to see if they will allow the Gay Games rowing competition to be held in the actual Crystal Lake. There was a previous vote taken, but it ended in a tie. Tonights tie-breaker will consist of five voters, one of whom was on vacation when the first vote was held.

It was refreshing to see my boss, Tracy Baim, quoted in todays Tribune:

[Gay Games] Organizers don’t look at a tie vote as evidence that Crystal Lake is a close-minded community, Baim said, adding, “We have people who are anti-gay in the city of Chicago.”

Amen sister.  It’ll be sad if people around the world don’t get the chance to see Crystal Lake, but I won’t be mad about it if they don’t.  It sucks that it’s appearing as a hot button anti-gay item, because in reality I don’t think it is.  But the media, as usual, blows things up into balloons that pop with the slightest nudge.

Kee hee, I was listenin’ to the pns explosion and I heard the pinball number count. How hysterical that it’s haunting my life. I’ve closed with it at Spin for quite a few Friday’s now.

I think all of us love the memories it evokes.

I wanna meet those PNS boys…
