Check Please

Tuesday, May 11th, 2004

Good god. I’ve been ignoring this blog again. It’s such a shame. I have so many good things to say…

So the people from “Check Please” called. They liked my post. After wowing one of the producers with my lexicographical prowress over the phone, they want me to be on the show. I reviewed San Soo Gab San online. I can’t wait. I like television. I like seeing myself on television. I like knowing that people are seeing me on television. Whee!

I saw Angie Stone over the weekend at the House Of Blues. Every big juicy gurl in the city was there. Big gurls doin’ it fo’ themselves I guess. It wasn’t that crowded, but there was a lot of boobie and booty around. I kept bumping into a lot of it while I was dancing.

Ain’t nothin’ wrong with a lil’ boobie. Boobie feed da world…

Anyway, Van Hunt opened for La Stone. WOW! His album is incredible. I was inspired to buy it after hearing him. Really good stuff. Watch out for him ’cause he’s comin’ up.

Michelle Weeks is FABulous

Thursday, April 29th, 2004

More than a week since my last post. Tsk.

I’ve been a busy boy tho let me tell you. That camera has been working! I’ve sold a few pics to Nightspots. I’m PUBLISHED!!!

Let’s see, last weekend was a total hoot. I met Michelle Weeks at Club Reunion on Saturday night. Had a nice chat with Frankie Knuckles and Dana Powell, two LEGENDARY people in my life. On Sunday had a great Japanese lesson with some pretty hard homework, but I managed to get through it okay. Still a little tricky on the adjectives, but I’m doing better.

Monday night was the Bar Olympics at Bucks. Spin won first place (YES, THASS RIGHT!!!). Good times.

Tuesday night was the Gay Idol at Hunters. Kirk drove me all the way out there. Long ride, but really fun show. My lesbian girlfriend Amy Matheny was hosting. I got some fierce pictures of her as well.

Last night was a fun romp around Evanston ’cause my teacher could not find parking near our usual spot. So instead we dropped her car off at her house and walked around for a while. Eventually we ended up at the People’s Market. I drank carrot juice and once again murdered the language I love to love.

I have a new word in my lexicon thanks to Orion, the handsome straight security guard working at Spin. Well, you know how people have Backne…i.e. acne on your back. Orion dropped: Rackne. Yes, that’s right, acne on your boobings. Euww.

And speaking of new words, why is it that some people like to describe the ignorant and stupid things that performance artists do and actually talk about them as art ? From the Village Voice:

“Also on view is Seedbed. In this legendary sculpture/performance Acconci lay beneath a ramp built in the Sonnabend Gallery. Over the course of three weeks, he masturbated eight hours a day while murmuring things like, “You’re pushing your c$%t down on my mouth” or “You’re ramming your co%k down into my as$.” Not only does the architectural intervention presage much of his subsequent work, but all of Acconci’s fixations converge in this, the spiritual sphincter of his art. In Seedbed Acconci is the producer and the receiver of the work’s pleasure. He is simultaneously public and private, making marks yet leaving little behind, and demonstrating ultra-awareness of his viewer while being in a semi-trance state. This extraordinary artistic marker, left 32 years ago this January, is still on the outer banks of the aesthetic perimeter. ”

No no no people. That nasty motherf$%ker is just jacking off in public. Does ANYONE ELSE think that too? Nasty pervert, take your pee pee and wank it somewhere else. Shocking.

Goddamn art-speak folks. They can turn anything into something artistic. It’s like calling a turd you just laid in the toilet “an eleoquent commentary on the digestive system, complete with an olfactory sensation which is familiar, yet distantly earthy.”

Nasty. Really nasty. What TF is this world cumming to? (sorry, couldn’t resist :-p )

I love my Nikon

Wednesday, April 21st, 2004

My camera arrived late in the day on Monday at work! It’s a Nikon D70, and let me tell you, it’s FABulous!

To be honest, I’ve been very apprehensive about taking the digital plunge. In fact, I was very ANTI-digital for quite some time. Film, a far superior medium, seems to be taking a backseat because people want things NOW NOW AND NOW regardless of quality. That’s disgusting in my opinion.

That said, shelling out $1,400 for a new D70 kit was terrifying. But I don’t like to fuck around when it comes to quality. Owning an 8008 for the last 7 years has taught me the value of Nikon hardware and glass. Their optics are great and their control systems very intuitive.

The D70 performs brilliantly. It’s not a film camera, but it does perform.

On Monday night at Clark’s On Clark I took it for a test run. Wow! Easy to use on the fly, quick to focus, quick to respond, a real performer. The pictures were good for what they were. Nothing brilliantly artistic mind you, but hey, they work:

http://www.mavriksound.com/gallery.html

Last night at Roscoe’s I photographed some drag queens in the Drag Race. Again, subject matter left a lot to be desired, but the photos turned out nicely. However, it will be a learning curve trying to determine the quality of ambient light in each club. That’s definitely something to work on and learn how to mix it in with my camera’s onboard flash.

And now, time for me to eat a box of sticky rice I brought with. Mmmm, glutinous rice…

Kill Bill Vol 2

Monday, April 19th, 2004

No, I do not want to blog on the weekend. But let me tell you about it…

Oh my god. I saw Kill Bill Vol 2 twice. What an incredible movie. Yes, I’m in slight agreement with the critics that it moved a little slow in parts. But really, if you look at both movies as a whole, the slow scenes balance out the frighteningly fast ones. And how FIERCE was Miss Ellie Driver (Hannah)! What an incredible character she played, and a brilliant acting job. That was my favorite fight scene.

I have so much more to say about the movie, but I have to see it a few more times. Well, one more tidbit “gwen Lana Turner ecame on thee escreen, Beeel began to esuck his thumb incessanly…” Fucking hysterical.

Friday night was really slow at Spin. I get so frustrated when there is no one in the club. I kept thinking it was the music I was playing, but when I would descend from the booth and check out the crowd, there was none. Despite all that, we had a fierce shower contest. Seemed like everyone showed up for the show and left right after. The back closed early and I was not a happy puppy. I still got paid of course, but I like to spin for a crowd. *sigh* How AM I gonna fix that?

Saturday morning I got my butt up and headed down to work to meet with my friend Peter to put together some music for his performance at Cherry in D.C. He selected an older song “You Make The World Go Round” which in my opinion was a bit too out of date. That said, he was really feeling the song and he knows it well, so I’m certain his energy will lift it up to another level. I added an explosion at the end and some outro beats. Not much really, but he was happy with it.

After wandering to State street with him, I went to Marshall Fields for lunch. 7 on State was dead and I had a nice quiet table by the window. After eating I hit H&M and Old Navy (the new shopping therapy ritual) and got some bits and pieces for my bits and pieces.

Sunday morning I finally watched Lost In Translation. What a bad story shot in such a beautiful way. I found most of it completely boring, but the scenery was gorgeous. The only real highlight was the prostitute scene: “Lip My Stockings!”

In the afternoon I hit Chinatown with DJ Stoney for dim sum at Happy Chef. NOT what I was expecting. The food was just ok. I’m not one to gnaw on pork bones, so the ribs didn’t do it for me. And when the chicken feet came, I tried the sauce and a bit of rice but wasn’t impressed. It just didn’t taste like much. But I ate some of the other things and filled myself up. Those Chinese eat a lot of odd things to me. I don’t think I’ll be doing dim sum there again any time soon. I’ll stick with Japanese, Korean, Thai, or Vietnamese when I want something Asian. Chinese food just isn’t doing it for me lately.

Nikon’s on it’s way!

Friday, April 16th, 2004

Oh glorious day! I just received an e-mail from Ritz camera and my Nikon D70 will arrive on Monday. Not that I was ignorant to the huge dip in my checking account, but hey, I Wasn’t sure when it was going to get here. And now I know!

This is my first real plunge into digital photography. I’m a little scared to be honest. I still love the feel of a film camera, and my original kick back against digital was the lack of negatives 50 years from now. Oh well, I suppose I’ll just need to start a massive archive of CD’s holding everything I ever shoot.

In other news, Kill Bill is in the theaters. I’m going to see it before I get to Spin this evening. I MUST SEE IT! I MUST!

Last night I went to the Gay Idol competition at Clark’s on Clark. They were short a judge so I stepped into the position. It was a low key crowd but there were some good performers. I can’t wait for the finals. Should be interesting.

70 degrees?

Wednesday, April 14th, 2004

Chicago’s ultra prescient weather forecasters are telling us it’s going to be 70 degrees tomorrow. I’ll believe it when I have a sleevless top and I’m jogging in the park. Until then うそだ!(uso da! = it’s a lie!)

I watched Kill Bill twice last night. That Sofie Fatale is my idol. I kept listening to her FLAWLESS translation while O-Ren Ishii is talking to the Yakuza council. Brilliant, abso-fucking-lutely brilliant. I SOO want to be her. Flawless on the Japanese with slicked back hair and black clothes. (Two years. I must learn Japanese in less than two years…) And who taught O-Ren (Lucy Liu) to speak? They need to coach her some more. Even The Bride (Uma’s) Japanese was better.

Enough Kill Bill. T-minus two days until I’m watching Vol 2. *sigh*

There is something about the Linguini Carbonara from Calo that puts me to sleep. I think it might be the 349857304875 calories in their alfredo sauce. I slept like a rock and had dreams of Markus Schenkenberg. MMMMmmmm, Markus Schenkenberg…

Useful Japanese Phrase Of The Day*:

Kill Bill Volume One

Tuesday, April 13th, 2004

Oh my god. Ignorant me. I’ve been so busy I’m really crap at updating this damn blog.

Last night was the Bar Olympics at Spin. Shower Contest…mmm, wet people in the shower! I ended up getting ABSOLUTly smashed with the crew. I think I drank more last night that I did over the past two months. Oh well, good times.

Of course, this morning I’m greeted with rumors that something happened between me and Orion, the ultra beautiful new security guard. No kids, nothing happened. We shared a cab ’cause we live in the same direction. Get your minds out of the gutter!

I haven’t told you about my rice cooker. Zojirushi NS-ZAC18 10-Cup Neuro Fuzzy Rice Cooker. I’m in love with my rice cooker. It makes fierce steel cut oats, flawless rice and congee, and delicious brown rice. I love it so much that I want to write poetry about my rice cooker. In fact, here is a fun haiku:

Rice so hot and moist
Zojirushi you did good
ごはんたべろ

The last line is written in hiragana and says “gohan tabero”. Gohan means both rice and “a meal” in Japanese. Tabero is the forceful way to say “EAT!” Yes, Japanese lessons are purring along at a steady pace. My sensei is in Japan right now to visit her family. She has promised to bring me back a lesson book on how to do sumi-e painting. That’s the formal style of writing with brushes. OH MY GOD it’s hard! My good friend and chat buddy Tom (who speaks Japanese) was kind enough to visit Mitsuwa Marketplace in Arlington Heights and bring me a brush pen and some good brushes along with some paper and ink. He’s a doll and I love him for that. But of course, when I try and paint it looks like a toddler who can’t stay in the lines.

Oh well, I’ve taken up the challenge of Japanese. Must see it through.

Kill Bill Vol. 1 is on DVD. I have a copy in my bag. I MUST get home to watch Sofie Fatale while she is translating for O-Ren Ishii. She’s one of the reasons I’m learning Japanese. FIERCE!

Can’t wait for Vol 2 this weekend.
